Waver Dither Falter is a video installation that explores the repetitive and ritualistic actions in dance clubs through the technique of ostranenie or de-familiarization. The video clips of people dancing and lights flashing are closely cropped and highly saturated. Moreover, the videos are projected inside of body-sized paper objects, which act as a further method of de-familiarization. The paper objects further distort the videos and are both figure and ground; they remind us of something that we can’t exactly place. This piece encourages the viewer to bend, stoop, squint, and otherwise actively look as they attempt to decipher the origin of the videos.
